Implications of the Federal Budget and The Rural and Cooperatives Secretariat

by Rural Ontario Institute 24. May 2012 10:51

Among the varied and widespread consequences of the federal omnibus budget bill were the impacts on the The Rural and Cooperatives Secretariat.   The programs and services of the Secretariat were perhaps not high on the radar of all rural Ontarians but the Secretariat saw significant reduction in its programs and staff - down to a small group of policy people with few staff across rural Canada and the curtailment of the “Cooperative Development Initiative” and “Partnership and Community Development” programs.  The diminishment raises questions about if, and how, the government will continue to achieve important goals and outcomes for rural stakeholders in the operations of our national government.  These questions have been posed to The Honourable Gerry Ritz the Minister responsible for the Secretariat.  See the following pdf.
